Our Story

Discover Recycling Alternative. A company passionate about waste reduction, renewable energy and community development.

Recycling Alternative's story began in 1989, when co-founders Louise Schwarz and Robert Weatherbe noticed that no one was picking up recycling from offices in Vancouver. Louise and Rob stepped in to fill the void by collecting office paper to recycle in their brown Chevy hatchback — even preceding the now-ubiquitous blue box program. What started with just Louise and Rob driving around the city grew into the full-fledged operation (with a full fleet of trucks) the Recycling Alternative is today. We were the first (and still the largest) member of the Vancouver Biodiesel Co-Op, and run our trucks on 100 per cent recycled Biodiesel.

As a local pioneer in the industry, we're still committed to providing easy, convenient and economic recycling options for businesses, no matter how big or small.

Recycling Alternative is still locally owned and operated, with over 20 employees working hard to do our part for the environment. We have hundreds of clients across the Lower Mainland — forming an amazing community of dedicated, forward-thinking recyclers. We're always thinking of ways to expand and better contribute to a more sustainable community, city, and Earth!
