Program Description

The Graduate Certificate (ENVEDCO-CERT) in Environmental Education and Communication is a leadership program that focuses on developing the competency and skill of educators and communicators who have an interest in, or responsibility for presenting environmental information to audiences.  

This interdisciplinary program will build theoretical and practical knowledge and skills. The program will provide solid grounding in environmental studies and sustainability, learning theory, environmental education, educational program development, philosophical and cultural analysis, journalism and communications.

The program complements, and builds on expertise in related degree programs at Royal Roads University in Environmental Management, Environmental Science, Conflict Resolution, Leadership and Training, and Distributed Learning.

This program is laddered, which allows individuals to complete a graduate certificate, graduate diploma, or full master's degree.

Students have the option of a graduate certificate upon successful completion of a residency and one distance-based semester (approximately five months) or a graduate diploma upon successful completion of two residences and two distance-based semesters (approximately one year).

Who it’s for

Educators and communicators are interested in, or responsible for presenting environmental information to audiences.  Typically, students are engaged in occupations ranging from teachers, educators and journalists to communication professionals, public relations specialists, government policy analysts and non-governmental organization program developers.

Graduates of this program will have solid grounding in environmental studies and sustainability, learning theory, environmental education, educational program development, philosophical and cultural analysis, journalism and communications.

Graduates return to their careers with a range of theoretical knowledge, analytical and communications skills, and competencies enabling them to employ a wide range of techniques and formats. They are able to develop and implement innovative programs to provide students, clients and other audiences with science-based information, psychologically-sound strategies, and culturally-appropriate, philosophically-nuanced and educationally-sophisticated approaches to current environmental issues.
